BARRA TAILS

This is your page send us your stories/adventures and pictures from Monduran to share with other anglers.

Hi John,
This is a photo of a Barra I caught at Monduran at 0830, on 15/11/2009. It measured 125 cms and we estimated that it may weigh about thirty kilos or so, too heavy to lift up for a decent photo. I caught it on a plain gold Viper Predator 4m lure, we were trolling along the right hand bank, heading back towards the dam wall and basin. I new that it was a big fish and it would have been too heavy to lift into my small boat, we would no doubt have ended up in the water with the fish.
We were in my 3.15m tinny, so I let off the drag, and it pulled the boat sideways for over half a kilometer. My mate lifted the motor clear of the water and he finally he rowed the boat into the bay next to the boat ramp entrance. I then managed to jump ashore and played him into the shallows. We both went into the water up past our knees and together we pulled him up the bank. We took a few photos and we only had a 42cms piece of wood to measure it with, three full lengths less a centimeter. Time was off the essence to get it back into the water, even this was not easy, but he finally swam off with slow movements of his tail.
Strangely enough, twenty minutes later, Dennis,  my mate caught a 84 cms fish,  just outside the ramp entrance near the dam wall, again we took him into the shore and pulled him up the bank. This one we kept as we were keen to have a feed and to see how they tasted. I soaked the fillets in salt water for about half an hour, tasted not bad, about 7/10. These were the only two fish that we caught over six days, so I guess it is luck and patience, just have to keep a lure in the water and wait, wait, wait.

Happy fishing and retailing,   Jon Rainbird.
